Trump celebrates landmark peace deal in Middle East

US President Donald Trump has hailed a “new Middle East” following the recent ceasefire agreement in Gaza, calling it a historic moment that could mark the beginning of lasting peace and prosperity in the region. The truce ends more than two years of intense conflict between Israel and Gaza, with major milestones including the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners.

At a summit in Egypt, Trump signed the initial phase of the Gaza ceasefire, alongside leaders from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey. He described the ceasefire as an unprecedented achievement that many had deemed unattainable and said it opens a new chapter defined by hope and security. Trump also emphasised cooperation and dialogue among all parties as crucial to building peace and stability, while acknowledging the deep religious and cultural significance of the Middle East.

The agreement, known as the Trump Peace Agreement, involves phased releases of prisoners and hostages and plans for reconstruction in Gaza. Trump expressed optimism about expanding the Abraham Accords, his signature peace framework normalising relations between Israel and several Arab nations. However, critics note that ongoing challenges remain, including unresolved issues in the West Bank and the question of Palestinian statehood.

Trump’s administration will lead implementation efforts, including establishing governance mechanisms in Gaza, underlining the administration’s commitment to a long-term presence in the peace process. While Trump declared the ceasefire a turning point, analysts caution that success will depend on sustained diplomatic engagement and practical steps to address the region’s complex divisions.
